Gap Creek Preserve is located on land with a distinctive history. Still discernable on the terrain is an Indian trade route known as the Oakafuskee Trail, which later became Seven Islands Road used by early settlers. Arrowheads and other artifacts can still be found on the property today.
Thirty five years ago, wildlife biologist David Morris founded “Burnt Pine Plantation”, a well known commercial hunting preserve. Morris had started “Georgia Sportsman” magazine and also “North American Whitetail” magazine, which were later replicated across the United States. David, along with Jeff Foxworthy, is the host and producer of “The Bucks of Tecomate”, a very popular TV hunting show.
Of all the hunting properties controlled by Burnt Pines, David Morris chose this particular tract for the personal hunting enjoyment of his “inner circle” of partners and close personal friends. Known as the “Magazine Tract”, it was enjoyed only by a fortunate few. Trophy managed for 25 years, it produced many Big Bucks.
Located directly across Gap Creek Preserve frontage on Little River is the State owned B.F. Grant Wildlife Management Area (www.n-georgia.com). Quality buck management practices have been instituted at B.F. Grant which promote that only mature bucks are harvested and only in closely regulated time periods.
In addition to the excellent whitetail population the property has an abundance of turkey and ducks. Mallards, Widgeons, Pintails, Geese and Wooducks have been seen on the +/- 4 acre natural duck pond.
All of this history makes Gap Creek Preserve a very special place for those who love wildlife, and appreciate the opportunity to continue the legacy.
